The Magic of Afternoon tea


Afternoon tea was introduced in England by Anna, the seventh Duchess of Bedford, in the 1840’s. The Duchess would become hungry around four o’clock in the afternoon. The evening meal in her household was served fashionably late at eight o’clock, thus leaving a long period of time between lunch and dinner.

Since then, afternoon tea has come a long way and has now evolved into something very special.  Hogarths Hotels are evidence of that. We interviewed Executive Head chef Alex Alexandrov and Head Pastry chef Zoe Turnecliff, to see how much that tradition has changed.

Alex explained, “we currently produce over 500 afternoon teas a month at Hogarths and everyone one of them is made from the very best fresh local produce. It is important that we always have adequate supply of all items so our afternoon tea production is ongoing throughout the day. Afternoon tea at Hogarths has been popular for over 5 years and has grown in popularity since the introduction of our Rosette standard Brasserie. Hogarths change our afternoon teas on a regular basis, this allow us to use seasonal produce and also keep the experience exciting for our regular visitors”

As well as the guests who dine in our Brasserie, we also have a number of private event rooms where each week we host many baby showers, christenings and naming ceremonies. The afternoon tea option is really popular for these as they present a more relaxed and informal option of dining.

Zoe, explained that “afternoon tea has really changed, even more so to meet the needs of many guests with dietary requirements. Vegan, gluten and dairy free are all catered for to ensure guests feel they are enjoying the same experience as others.  We test recipes all the time to ensure that we get that balance between taste and texture absolutely spot on”

We are now currently putting the final touches to our autumn collection of afternoon teas which will see some creative cake selections and use of seasonal produce.  We as a team strive to deliver healthy, plentiful and wholesome food, where we work with our producers to use the best ingredients in everything we make and bake.
